Dear EASAians!

For the SESAM010 (pos_sesam/sovata) we are trying to compete for European Union funds, for what we would need to have lectures of specific topics during the workshop. The topics are: sustainability, continuity of traditional lifestyles in modern society, heritage of traditional handcraft proffesions converted to modern life. These teams must be represented by non-governmental organisations (NGO). The non-governmental organisation form is very important as for the competition is important, that all these are initiatives of civil people.

I would like to ask for your help to find these kind of organizations in your country. If you have any idea, or you know this kind of group that’s main aim is to help to continue traditonal handcraft professions, to help to maintain traditional lifestyles, or to integrate traditional architecture of regions to contemporary architecture, please give me their availability, so i can contact them.

Observations, “status report”

Sovata is an unique, particular area, the values needs to be protected, preserving the original status

Nature is not the only value in the area, Sovata’s architectural heritage also represents big part of it. This kind of therme architecture is more and more rair to find in this good condition. At the beginning of the century, it had a very fancy bath culture. Famous families from all over Europe come to visit or spend their whole summer at this area to enjoy the medical treatments and the possibilities of the beautiful nature. This special environment is loosing more and more from its glory because of the missing preservation. The reconstruction of them would have a significant influence on rising the number of tourists. This kind of bath architecture has an old history that with a contemporary inpact could connect the old traditions with the modern bath tourism. The altland with it’s natural phenomena and it’s culture has a special eclectic athmosphere. The salt rocks of Sovata. The heliothermic lakes, the saltcave of Parajd, the ceramic of Korond all represents the rich culture of the territory for the tourists that come to visit. This all makes a unit that has no element which could be detouched or unalienable. The power of Saltland times back to its rich cultural past and how it will pass and preserve this to the new wave. In the touristic field of Transylvania has a very large spectrum of rivals from all over the world. It’s very important to define specificly which is the target group and that will help to define the new concept of touristic self-indentification.

Story of the planning process

Once upon a time there was a young architect in Transylvania, who found out that a dens area of world heritage is in danger. He decided to go and check what is it about. The place is located in the valley of Carpatian mountains and connects 5 lakes ( Bear-, Piroska-, Red-, Green-, Mogyorósi lake) The Bear lake is a very special kind of a thermal bath that is the result of the salt rocks-which are the basin of the lake-and the solar rises that can’t escape from the salty liquer. In the summertime the water can achieve 50/60 degrees in 1 m depth. The bathregion has a beautifully built haritage as well, that doesn’t have any regulation how to keep or rebuild them. As a development of the area someone decided to do a utility plan, and thought that this will increase the value of Sovata and give an answer for the low tourist capacity. The architect knew that this concept won’t help and that he needs to find a team that can co-operate and save what is left there.

The architect from Transylvania, Szabolcs Korodi found our studio and a project manager office, the Multinvest Kft. to work out the concept which could give a new perspective for Sovata to achieve it’s famousity from the Monarchi Era.

In our opinion, only a sensitive intervention can raise the territory to a Western-European quality level. The regulation of the preservation of built heritage, development of facilities and a high quality architectural design is necessary to reach the intention of being still tempting and satisfying for a new generation that has the opportunities to travel all over the world.

The bridge between two rocks.

At the end of the West path, on the top of the hill we wanted to place a viewpoint.

Concept of the look-out tower is built from a traditional texture, this pattern is part of the structure and creates the facade.

On the "path of salt" there is a small lake, called Rigó lake. Today is very difficult to get close to it because the sides are all muddy. It has a very relaxing atmosphere so we thought it would be great to have a place to sit and just listen to silence.

The basic concept of the structure was to integrate the already existing and beautiful wooden braid to our items.We wanted to use this design to all our objects. This picture shows the repetition of the terraces on the lake shore.
